Online art directories and search engine optimisation.
Many artists use online directories to help build interest in their websites. It seems that this is a great way to develop an audience. Some artists also use directories to help develop search engine pagerank for their website. After viewing many art directories and general directories with art sections I have noticed that many directories have a high pagerank top page but the pagerank reduces significantly as you go deeper into the directory. A directory may have a top page with a pagerank of five but the actual pages containing the weblinks and listings have a pagerank of zero.
If the idea is just to promote a website this is probably fine, but if the hope is to build pagerank using directories it will probably not help all that much having a link from a pagerank zero page. Surprisingly some of these listings sell for significant amounts on some directories and an entire industry seems to have been developed by selling listings from high pagerank directories. It may be worth doing a pagerank check before buying a listing. There are many tools available online and it is easy to add a pagerank tool to a browser.
